Are two story buildings more economical than one-story buildings?

Not necessarily. Two-story buildings require stairways and elevators, which are expensive to build and maintain, and create safety issues and liability. For churches, I typically encourage one-story buildings, but when a building approaches 30,000 to 40,000 sf, a two-story building may be more economical even with the cost of stairs and elevators.
